7:02 am - Friday - December 21st - Grand Canyon -  16º F, 77% humidity, wind 6 mph out of the west......cloudy with our first snow on the ground.....

Awoke to about an inch of snow this morning (6:45 am)

......forecast high for today is 28º F with winds out of the west into the high teens.....TLE has decided to walk to work for the first time in over a month because she does not feel comfortable driving in the snow....I'll drive the car into work for her to use when she comes home after her 'open' shift ends, which will probably be early unless our customer foot traffic picks up significantly.  Today is also the 'winter solstice'.....from this day forward the sun will begin to rise earlier, and set later each day.....yay!!!

The winds which began Tuesday evening gained in strength all night, them abated around 6 am, only to return before 10 am.  I had the 'open' shift so I was off on my 1/2 mile walk by 7:15 am, arriving at the rear of the General Store to capture the sun rising.....

......we began our day still expecting an uptick in the foot traffic into our store as many of the schools in the area have closed for the holiday, but the only thing that was really different about Wednesday was that we had no inernet, and, therefore, could not process the credit cards of our customers, so we went to 'CASH ONLY' for the balance of my shift.  My shift ended shortly after TLE arrived at 11 am as there was not enough to keep both of us busy until 5, so I got off early on a day I would normally not have been working anyway.

Of course, as I mentioned earlier, the wind had returned an hour, or so prior to my departure from work and my walk home featured me being pushed from behind by the gusting winds.

By the time I got home it was obvious that it was too cold to be outside...without the winds it was about 50º, but with the windchill factor it felt like  the mid 30's at best, so I decided to get out my book and spend the afternoon reading (of course there was the odd nap here and there), and that is what I was doing when TLE arrived home from work about 5:35......she reports that they got internet service restored mid afternoon so were able to begin processing credit cards once again.

Just prior to her return I stepped outside to capture the sunset.....with all the clouds coming in from the west we were treated to one of our best sunsets in a while........

.......the winds continued unabated into the evening, and all night, and are still gusting as I write today's missive.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Really beautiful sunset pictures. Looking at your last picture all I can say we are glad to have escaped from the snow, finally, last week. We hope to only look at pictures of snow anytime in the future. As for driving in it, Elaine I have driven in it for, lets just say a lot of years, and I still do not like doing it. Stay warm and from Tom and I have a Merry Christmas.
