Feelin' like winter again......

After Thursday's one day heat wave we woke up to winter like conditions again Friday morning.  I didn't see that coming at all.  It was chilly, breezy with a little mist in the air at 6 am.  The weather guessers had guessed that it would be partly cloudy with a possibility of  "scattered" showers.  Well, apparently the "scattered" showers were directly over us the entire drive from Wall, SD to Spearfish, SD.

Our written in Jello plans called for backtracking about 25 miles to an old Minuteman Missile site used during the cold war, but the first tour available Friday morning was not until 10:30 am, and we didn't want to hang around Wall that long, and then get into Spearfish in the late afternoon.  So, we decided we just drive to a closer one that had no tour, and no inside access just to see it.

First we had to pull our coaches out of Sleepy Hollow RV Park and into the Wall parking lot as check out time was at 11 am, and we were not sure how long we would be gone. Once that was accomplished it started raining, and as we headed back east on I-90 it rained harder.  By the time we arrived at the Minuteman site it was raining pretty steadily.  Needless to say I wasn't interested in walking around the missile silo in the rain.  In the end Tom was the only one who got out of the car and walked around....TLE, Darlene and I observed from a distance, while staying dry.

Ultimately we drove back to Wall, which was only about 7 miles back, got in our coaches and headed for Spearfish in the rain.

It rained pretty much all the way to Spearfish, but not too hard, just hard enough to run the wipers.  We stopped about 25 miles shy of Spearfish at a rest stop to take a break for about 30 minutes.  One thing I would like to note here is that the rest areas in South Dakota are uniformly very, very nice.  All the ones we have stopped at have dump stations for RV's, and a staffed information center......and, most important of all, very clean restrooms......kudos to South Dakota!

We arrived at Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort and Cabins around 11:45 am in a slight drizzle and quickly checked in for site # 106.  By the time the sun set there were around 10 Newells on site with about 15 more to go.

Just a few of the Newells that have arrived so far - Lynn & Jeff

Tom and Darlene

Chester

Larry and Heddy

Just after we finished getting set up the sky fell.....I'm beginning to think that we bring the rain with us.  While it rained I had lunch and took a nap.  By the time I awoke it was around 4 pm, and the sun had come out.  The area we are in is absolutely beautiful......it was hard to tell when it was raining.

The next week will be busy with Newell activities, and so far we have made new friends.  Jeff and Lynn, who have been following our blog are parked right next to us, and we found out this evening they are also driving up to Cochrane for the Calgary Stampede.  In fact, they are staying at the same park!

Elkhorn on a scale of 1-5 stars is definitely a 4.5.  They have a large pool, meeting rooms, tennis courts, cabins, grass everywhere, very, very long pull through sites....ours is 120' long, and well stocked store with a great wine, beer and liquor selection.

Thanks for stopping by!
