Horseshoes

We slept with my window open Tuesday night, and by Wednesday morning around 6 it was down to 54 inside the bedroom, but we were toasty warm under the covers.  Next to rain on the aluminum roof, there is nothing sweeter than feeling the night air waft over your face as you sleep.....at least for me.  I love being in a place where you can have the windows open day, or night....it means we have found that sweet spot of temperature and climate.

We had just one modest goal for the day, to drive over and see the iconic "Horseshoe Bend"......just a few miles southwest from Glen Canyon Dam.  It is one of the most photographed spots on the Colorado River.  The drive to the parking lot was just over 11 miles, and the hike down to the vista point which was just under 1/2 mile each way.  It was funny, we met a lady walking back up the modest hill who took the time to stop and insist we go back to our car and get water.  She advised there was no way we could make the walk without water.....she kept saying "it's soooo dry......it's soooo dry!".  I was wondering what she knew that we didn't....after all I could see the vista point, and it was not that long, or difficult a walk.  As it turns out she didn't know anything I didn't know.  It was just barely 70 degrees with a cool breeze.....no danger of dehydration on this short hike.

In order to take a picture that includes all of the Colorado River as it flows around Horseshoe Bend you have to get within 3 feet of the edge of the cliff.....a cliff that if you fall from you will free fall approximately 1,000 feet before hitting the bottom.  TLE couldn't watch as I inched up to the edge to take my pictures, but it really didn't bother me.  It is one of those "bigger than life" views that I have seen pictures of for decades and always wanted to see in person.  Of course my phone camera pictures do not do it justice.

The "pano"....didn't like the color on this one as
much as the next one, which is not a "pano"

We spent about 30 minutes just soaking in the view.....it is very captivating, and one wishes they had brought a chair to just sit in  enjoying for several hours.  We managed to make our way back to our car with no one expiring from lack of water.  Our next stop was the Walmart for a new water filter, and some other things.....then on to the local visitor's center to pick up a few brochures on the area.  As we drove up Lake Powell Blvd. to the visitor's center we spied a one screen movie theater on the right that was playing Captain America: Winter Soldier .....we had not planned to go to the movies, but there it was, and we were free the rest of the day, so we decided to come back at 3:30 to see it.  We didn't see the first Captain America, but we thoroughly enjoyed this one.

On our way home from Horseshoe Bend we stopped at the Wahweap Vista Point.  I'm really getting into taking panorama shots, and thought this one came out pretty good.

By the time we got home from the movie the sun was getting low in the sky.....the next pictures were taken about 6:30...

Just after we got "home" about 6:30.....love the lighting

It wasn't much longer until the sun began to set.....I missed the best part of it, but I think you get the idea.  We love our current location, and are so glad we are able to change up our plans and spend a week here.  The solitude is delectable.

Thanks for stopping by!
