Mystical, other worldly Borrego......

7:26 am - Thursday - February 6th - Borrego Springs, CA - 39° F, 65% humidity, wind 5 mph out of the northwest.....clear, cold, blue skies this morning with a forecast high today of 72° F.  The view this morning.........↴

Looking north

Wednesday began our first full day in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, just outside of Borrego Springs, CA.  We love the almost other worldly, somewhat mystical, haunting solitude found here.  We are about 100' off S-22 (the state highway which connects us to Salton City on the east, and Borrego Springs on the west.  The actual road distance to Borrego Springs is around 9 miles from our location.  We hardly notice the occasional vehicular traffic, and the view to the north is spectacular.

I spent the morning pulling more stuff out for our month long stay......Sea-B-Que, table for Sea-B-Que, camp chairs, all three bikes, a table for the trailer to set my three tool bags upon, portable trash can, etc.  About mid morning I received an email from Chris, my son, attaching copies of expected mail we had received from the California EDD (Employement Development Department) for our unemployment, and we spent the rest of the morning, and into the afternoon setting up accounts with the EDD so we may begin to receive our weekly benefits.

Around 2 pm I hopped on my Cannondale Bad Boy and rode into Borrego Springs to visit the local USPS in order to pickup 3 small Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes to ship out the 3 Seiko Automatic Speedtimers whose auctions closed around 11 am.   As expected I received the highest bid on the gold Pogue Seiko ($316), the navy blue dial Seiko garnered $269, and the salmon dial Seiko $216.  So, for an investment of $315 to have all three serviced I received over $800....not too bad a return.  I received a call from the Jeweler in Riverside on the fourth Seiko Automatic (black dial) that it would cost $69 to purchase and install a new stem/crown.....the one I provided was not the correct one.  Any rate I will have that watch back in about 2-3 weeks, and will list it on eBay at that time.

The 9 mile ride into town went quickly, and within 5 minutes I had the three flat rate boxes strapped on top of my trunk bag, and was on my way back home.......

.....where I arrived around 3:40 pm.  The round trip ride (moving time) took 1 hour, 23 minutes.....I averaged 12.8 mph (had a headwind inbound), covered just under 18 miles, and burned 986 caloric units........

.....after my first two long rides in Riverside on the SART* my knees, and hips were a little stiff, but after third long ride I had no real stiffness, and my posterior is getting used being on the saddle again!

Around 4:15 pm I started the fire for our first evening fire as we prepared to watch our second Borrego sunset.......

.....of course there were a couple fingers of Scotch Whiskey, and a cigar for good measure.....

.....the sunset was not spectacular, but it was interesting.  The sky all around us turned pink as the sun dipped further below the western horizon......

There's the moon showing through the thin cloud cover

.....I turned on the Sea-B-Que to grill some pollo asado for the Street Tacos TLE had promised, and were they ever good.....

....I turned on the LED strip lighting I installed under the rocker panel a year ago.....looks so cool at night.....

.....as we headed inside for the night I saw the city lights of Borrego Springs beginning to twinkle......

....another great day in Anza Borrego!  Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Not sure how long you're in Anza Borrego, but early March there's a MTB event called the Stagecoach 400 that starts in Idyllwild, down to SD beach, up through Borrego Springs, and back to Idyllwild. Might be fun to cheer the riders on.
