'Feels like 10º F.....'

6:36 am - Wednesday - January 22nd - Amarillo, TX - 21º F (feels like 10º F), 56% humidity, wind 10 mph out of the west by northwest.......clear, but still dark.....forecast high in Amarillo for today is 50º F.  We roll our wheels in 3 hours!

Not much to write about Tuesday......the winds remained steady in the 30's most of the day, and the temp never got above 32º F, while the 'feels like' temp was in the high teens all day long.  I had planned to disconnect from city water sometime Tuesday as we knew it would be below freezingTuesday night, but we were not expecting it to be so cold during the day.  As a result our water line froze necessitating me going outside to disconnect it, and then drag the hose into into what sun so the frozen water inside might unfreeze and drain out, which it did eventually.  To say it was bitter cold outside does not adequately describe it.

Because of the high winds we just stayed inside (except for two, or three outdoor forays for me) with all electric heaters running non-stop all day long.  We had planned to do some more sightseeing Tuesday, but the wind and the 'feels like' temperature quickly put to rest any such notions.

We spent the entire day watching a backlog of recorded shows from our DVR, as well as the Hallmark channel (there where at least three naps for moi).  Eventually the heavy cloud cover dissipated and the sun did come out for a few hours at the very end of the day.  By 8 pm the winds began to abate.

We knew it would be very windy Tuesday, which is why we opted to stay here until Wednesday, but we were not expecting the super cold temperatures.  Weather.com says it is 21º F as I write (7:02 am), and that by 9 am (our projected departure time) it should rise all the way to 26º F.  If we were just 509 miles south of here in San Antonio we would be experiencing 40º F right now with a forecast high of 60º F.....now that is more like it.  It is what it is, and we shall make the best of this arctic blast and continue westward to Flagstaff over the next few days.

The 'Hard Stick'........

7:45 am - Tuesday - January 22nd - Amarillo, TX - 32º F, 86% humidity, wind 24 mph out of the north......cloudy today with a forecast high of 34º F, and winds approaching 30 mph!  What a change from yesterday!

We have passed through Amarillo several times over the years, but have never visited Palo Duro Canyon State Park, so Monday it was time to right this wrong.  I wish we would have had more than one day to explore and hike this natural wonder, but we did the best we could do.

As you know if you read yesterday's blog entry, we had a wonderful sunrise.....the kind of sunrise you can only get where you have a big horizon (Cedar Key comes to mind, also).......for those who missed it, here it is again......

.....we unloaded the VW around 10 pm and were on our way south to Palo Duro Canyon shortly thereafter.  It's around a 36 mile drive to the State Park entrance where you pay $6 per car to enter.  This time of year all the restrooms in the park are closed except for the ones at the entrance, so if you have to go you need to do so before you go any further.....I wish we had known that before we drove down to the Visitors Center.....

At the Palo Duro Canyon Visitors Center

.....if asked, most people who have been to both the Grand Canyon and Palo Duro will tell you it (Palo Duro) is not that spectacular when compared to the Grand Canyon, but standing by itself it is definitely worth a look. It is the second largest canyon in the United States.

We arrived at the park entrance around 10:45 am and spent the next few hours driving the 10% grade road down to the canyon floor where it forms a large loop offering numerous places to park and hike well marked trails.  To really see Palo Duro (Spanish meaning 'Hard Stick') in all its glory you really need to hike into the back country a few miles, but did not have time on Monday for an extended hike so TLE picked one that was about 2.1 miles in length which linked 3 different trails together (Sunflower, Rojo Grande, Juniper Cliffs) making our hike a big loop, which we prefer, as opposed to an 'out and back' hike.....

 Getting started

We wondered about these white streaks (↑) in the red clay and found out at the end of our hike what they were (↓)

.....in all we covered 2.1 miles in about 48 minutes of moving time (52 minutes over all), and burned just shy of 400 caloric units.  The temperature was perfect, and the hiking difficulty was moderate.  There are many other much longer hikes which get you to the real interesting rock formations in the park that we would like to take in the future when we pass through this area again.  By the time we finished it was closing in on 2 pm and time to head back to Amarillo where we had plans to go to The Big Texan Steak Ranch and Brewery around 4:30 pm......as we exited the park we noted about a 1 mile line of cars waiting to enter the park.....we timed our arrival perfectly.....

.....it is difficult, if not impossible to miss The Big Texan as there are signs everywhere announcing its existence.  I ate here 9 years ago with my good friend Claude Banker as we were heading west on I-40, and thought TLE would get a kick out of it.  As I mentioned yesterday, this is the home of the 72 Ounce Steak Challenge (eat the 72 oz. steak, and everything else on the plate in an hour, or less and the $72 steak is free....good luck with that!).  Even at 4:30 pm the place was already hopping......

.....most of the seating inside is what I would call 'family style', but we were shown to a booth.  This place is also a mirco brewery, so it does not get much better for us.  I immediately ordered a pint of their Pecan Porter, and TLE their Whiskey Barrel Stout.  For our entrees I had their 'Double Cut Filet' (two 5 oz filets) with sauteed mushrooms, a baked potato, and beef steak tomatoes and red onions, and TLE their Center Cut Sirloin (8 oz).....

.....during our one hour sojourn there were no takers for the 72 oz Steak Challenge.....probably too early in the evening.  The brews were very good, and our steaks were cooked to perfection.  The portions are quite large there, and we ended up taking home two 'to go' boxes with our leftovers. We each were only able to eat about half of what was on our plates, and went home feeling very stuffed.  We had a wonderful, relaxing day and it turned out just as I had imagined.

Bigger Horizons......

7:40 am - Monday - January 21st - Amarillo, TX - 34º F, 63% humidity, wind 11 mph out of the south......mostly clear skies with an amazing sunrise......got to love those big horizons in the Texas Panhandle!

 Amarillo sunrise

We only had 166 miles to travel Sunday, but we did want to be on the road between 9 and 9:30 am.  Why?  Well, I wanted to be settled in our site in Amarillo before 2 pm so I could watch the NFC and AFC championship games.  I don't watch much NFL football anymore due to the National Anthem protests which began a couple of seasons ago.  The protests have largely disappeared with only one player kneeling during week 12 of the 2018 season.  At any rate the two match ups for Sunday pitted the L.A. Rams vs. the New Orleans Saints (1st game), and the New England Patriots vs. the Kansas City Chiefs (2nd game).  The Saints and Chiefs were favored to win their respective games.

We were out the gate of the RV park and merging back on to US-287 by 10 minutes after 9 am.  Our drive northwest on US -287 (a very nice divided highway, by the way) revealed a mostly deserted road.....we pretty much had the highway to ourselves for the three hour drive to Amarillo......

.....we made on short stop at a Rest Area about 100 miles into our day to use the bathroom, and, additionally, for me to check our tires....

The temperature of my recliner....😉

.....I use an 'OEM' infrared 'gun' to check the individual temperatures of our 10 tires (6 on the coach and 4 on the trailer).  What I am looking for is the one tire running way hotter than the others....like 20+º hotter.  If that is happening that means something is going wrong with that tire.  Doing this has saved me numerous blowouts from tread separation over the last 7 years, which is usually what is causing the tire to run hotter.  On this day all 10 of our tires were within 5º F of each other.

All the way from Vernon to Amarillo we were gaining elevation.  We began at 1,000 feet elevation and finished in Amarillo at just under 3,600'.  We actually got as high as 3,800' elevation about 20 miles south of Amarillo.....

Our altimeter is on the left, and the analog gauge on the right is our battery condition indicator

....we arrived at the RV park in Amarillo about 12:30 pm, paid for 3 days @ $14/day, picked a site, and connected the Newell to the utilities.  Within minutes I had dialed in our DirecTV DVR receiver and we were read to relax.  Our decision to pay for three days here in Amarillo is due to the heavy winds predicted for both Monday and Tuesday....Wednesday looks good, so we will stay put for three days, and visit Palo Duro Canyon while we are here, and, of course, The Big Texan Steak Ranch and Brewery.  I have eaten there before, but this will be TLE's first time.  The Big Texan is the home of the 72 oz. steak challenge....this steak costs $72, but if you can consume it, as well as everything else on the plate in one hour, or less you get a full refund.  Would I try it?  No way....I know I could not do it.

Both NFL games went to overtime, and were won by the visiting teams (Rams and Patriots).  I was personally pulling for the Rams as they would be the first L.A. team to reach the Super Bowl since the Raiders back in 1983, which they won.  We could not have asked for better games, but each one was marred by poor officiating at crucial times in each game benefiting the eventual victors.

We took a 1 mile walk around the RV park between the two games making it 8 straight days we have walked at least 1 mile, or more......thanks for stopping by!
