The silence of the lamb.....

7:01 am - Wednesday - February 5th - Borrego Springs, CA - 33° F, 36% humidity, wind - CALM....at last.....partly cloudy right now with a forecast high today of 66° F.  It is good to be back doin' the Borrego!  For those who may not know Borrego literally means lamb, or sometimes refers to the desert big horn sheep which can be found in the area.

I was out of bed by 6 am Tuesday morning listening to the sounds of silence.....the silence that follows a wind event....the sound of NO wind.  By 8:10 am we were rolling our wheels and heading 1 mile east to the 91 FWY, which we took north to the 60 FWY where we merged into the eastbound lanes heading for the desert!

The Newell just purred down the highway in that effortless way we have come to expect.  Just set the cruise control and hold onto the steering wheel.  It felt good to be glancing periodically at our Garmin Trucker GPS to see our progress eastward.  In less than 30 minutes we were merging into the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10.  The Garmin said our ETA at the ARCO Travel Center in Salton City (just 22 miles from Rockhouse Road) was 10:26 am, and with very light traffic we arrived just about that time.  We had not dumped our black and gray tanks since we left RORVR 10 days before so it was time, plus you always want to begin an extended boondocking stay with a full fresh water tank, and empty holding tanks.

After emptying our holding tanks, and taking on 100 gallons of fresh wather we were once again rolling our wheels knowing that in just 30 shorts minutes we would be arriving at our home for the next month.  We have boondocked at Rockhouse Road several times over the past few years....most recently we were here for 23 days in February of 2017......almost exactly 3 years ago.  We had heard from several different sources that the land on either side of Rockhouse Road was now closed to dispersed camping, however, when we drove by Rockhouse Road just before New Years we saw about a dozen RV's camped there, so I was puzzled, and not sure if what I had heard was correct.  We had a couple of other options in mind just in case the worst was true, so as we topped the last rise between us and Rockhouse Road we were not too surprised to find no RV's parked anywhere in the Rockhouse Road vicinity.  We did, however, see a couple of RV's just off S-22, so we pulled off the road to see if camping was allowed there and found that there was this little sliver of State Park land where you can still boondock legally right adjacent to the former Rockhouse Road boondocking area.....score!

There is room for 4-5 RV's in the little sliver of State Park land, but one of the things we love about the area is that your neighbors are not that close to you, so we found a spot big enough for our 62' not too close to either other other two RV's and began to set up camp......

Our nearest neighbor...a nice, respectful distance

You can just see our other neighbor there in the distance

....within 20 minutes I had our solar array tilted toward the sun in the southern sky, and we were putting a charge into our batteries.  After turning on the inverter I deployed our Winegard satellite dish, and we were ready for business......

.....next we removed the VW from the trailer, and I removed the firewood and portable fireplace hoping for an evening fire.....

Firewood stacked and ready for our first wood fire in almost a year!

.....but, alas, it was not to be as the wind came up again just as the sun was setting over the western mountains.......

.....oh well, there will be 30 other chances for a wood fire!  Nevertheless, the sunset was sublime.  As darkness enveloped us you could feel the peace of the area wrap around you.  The darkness here is inky black as the nearest ambient light is close to 10 miles away (Borrego Springs), and there is little sound at night except the sounds of the Anza Borrego Desert.  By 9 pm the wind had abated, and we slept like the dead.  For the first time in months the bedroom temperature dropped down under 50° F.....the outside temp got into the low 30's, but were as snug as two bugs in a rug....we just add an extra blanket and all is well.

Mr. Jello had other ideas......

6:24 am - Tuesday - February 4th - Riverside, CA - 44° F, 16% humidity, wind 11 mph out of the north by northeast......clear, cool today with a forecast high of 56° F.

Our intent was to roll our wheels Monday morning and head for Borrego Springs, as I have mentioned a few times before.  I was awakened around 4:30 am Monday morning to the sound of wind buffeting the Newell, and whistling through the window awnings.  We traditionally avoid driving when there is a crosswind, or when it is raining, so I hoped the wind I heard was just temporary, not a day, or two wind event, and went back to sleep.

I got up sometime after 7 am and retrieved my phone to check the local weather and saw that the current wind speed was 23-25 mph directly out of the north, and was forecast to increase into the 30's later in the morning, topping out at 35 mph around 3 pm.  A wind out of the north means a crosswind if you are traveling east, or west......Borrego Springs is directly to the east of us.  When I saw the forecast it was easy to let Mr. Jello take the lead, and we decided to stay put for Monday, and try to haul anchor Tuesday morning.

This change in plans had some benefits for me.  First I was planning on organizing the trailer first thing Monday morning before inserting the car.  It takes about an hour to do so as long as we have not deployed to much of our 'stuff', which we had not, nevertheless, I was not looking forward to doing it in the morning.  Secondly, we still had TLE's Cannondale F600 bicycle, which I had planned to just take with us, but that meant I would have to find space to stow TLE's new eBike, which in turn meant I would probably have to move the firewood into the back of the Beetle......again, not looking forward to that.  Since we had one more day in town we decided to take TLE's Cannondale to my son's office warehouse, along with a few other things I had identified as not being needed when we begin our trip to Alaska in mid April.  Finally, we wanted to fill the rest of our purified water containers for our planned month long boondocking foray in the desert.

A little explanation on the water containers.  As you know, we have a 160 gallon fresh water tank which we utilize when we are boondocking, or dry camping as we have been the past 10 days.  When we boondock, or dry camp we do not use our R/O (Revers Osmosis) water purification system as it generates a lot of waster which fills our gray tank, and depletes our fresh water supply more quickly than we like.  We have three 5 gallon water containers, plus five 1 gallon water bottles.  When filled that gives us 20 gallons of drinking water for making coffee, drinking, cooking, etc.  The water in the fresh water tank is strictly used to flush the toilet, take showers, and wash dishes.  This lasts us about 10-14 days...sometimes longer.  We fill the water containers utilizing these purified water dispensing stations located in front of most supermarkets (which I believe have the brand name 'Glacier Water' on them) and/or liquor stores in California.  Locally there are two of these stations two blocks from where we are staying.  Five gallons costs $1.75.

Around 11:30 we drove into Rancho Cucamonga to drop off the additional stuff I mentioned above at my son's office warehouse, then headed home where we picked up the rest of our water containers and then were off to the Ralph's Supermarket two blocks away to get the water, and a few final items from the store for our pantry.  From there we headed directly across the street to the local Goodwill to see if they had anything interesting without which we could not live. This is one of our favorite Goodwill stores, and we find something almost every time we visit.  I recently recycled a bunch of t-shirts, so I need to resupply, and was lucky to find 3 interesting t-shirts to buy.

We arrived back at the Newell around 2:30 pm at which time I began to organize the trailer for our departure Tuesday morning.  By 4:30 pm I had everything stowed away, and I was done for the day.  Once that firewood is removed from the trailer at our campsite Tuesday we will have more room in the trailer than we have had in a very long time.  The wind was still howling when I closed the door behind me, which only served to validate our decision to stay in Riverside another day.

We watched a few more  episodes of 'Outlander' (I think we're on episode 13 of season 2 right now)......this series becomes more intriguing the deeper we get into it.

Super Bowl Sunday.....

7:47 am - Monday - February 3rd - Riverside, CA - 50° F, 21% humidity, wind 23 mph out of the north by northwest....clear, very windy today with a forecast high of 57° F.  Woke up to Santa Ana winds this morning around 23 mph out of the north, which are projected to top out at 35 mph.....we will not be rolling our wheels today.....hello Mr. Jello!

I began Sunday replacing the small 19" flat screen TV with the former 32" flat screen which used to be our 'outdoor TV'........

 The 32" TV installed

The now removed 19" TV

.....on Saturday we purchased a new TV mount for the 32" TV as the one I used for the 19" was not big enough for the bigger TV.  It is a swing arm wall mount so now I can turn the TV so I can see it when I'm working on a bike in the rear of the trailer.  As I wandered back and forth from the coach to the trailer it was nice to see the Super Bowl on a big TV just like the one in the salon.

Other than getting a haircut, and doing some shopping with TLE that was the sum total of my Sunday.  Everything I did revolved around Super Bowl LIV (54) beginning at 3:30 pm.

The Super Bowl itself was just what I ordered up.....a competitive game until 3 minutes to go in the game.  K.C. was up 24-20, and San Francisco just had to drive down the field and score a touchdown to win, but they failed to convert on 4th down and turned the ball over to K.C.  On the second play from scrimmage K.C. ran the ball, and the runner scored an unexpected touchdown to put K.C. up 11 points with just 2 minutes to play.....they were just trying to run out the clock.  I'm happy K.C. won as their last Super Bowl appearance and victory was 1969......50 years ago.  Of course, I always feel badly for the losing team, especially in a hard fought, close game where either team could have won.....K.C. just executed better when the chips were down.

9 years in.....

7:32 am - Super Bowl Sunday - February 2nd, Riverside, CA - 50° F, 48% humidity, wind 7 mph out of the north by northeast......clear, cool with a forecast high today of 74° F.

On February 1st we celebrated our 9 year anniversary of living full time in our 1982 Newell Classic Motorcoach, and 8 years of traveling hither and yon.  As we begin the 10th year of full time RV living we still cannot imagine living in a sticks and bricks home any time soon.  We love our home on wheels!

I began Saturday working TLE's new eBike....the bike is made in China, and distributed through 5 warehouses in the USA.  The bike name is YIIYYAA....I have no idea how to pronounce it, but TLE loves it.  It comes with a 500 watt electric motor, and a 36 volt lithium 10 ah battery.  Its range in full electric mode (no pedal assist) is about 17 miles, and using electric assist up to 37 miles.  The normal brake setup on any bike is the right brake lever controls the rear brake, and the left brake lever the front, but whoever assembled this bike had them reversed, so I had to spend some time moving said levers to their proper positions.......

 The fully assembled YIIYYAA

The 500 watt motor mounted in the rear hub

36 volt lithium 10 ah battery pack

TLE's Selle Anatomica seat transferred from the Cannondale

7 speed rear cassette (Shimano)...21 speeds in all

 3 chain rings in front

 Shimano mechanical disc brakes

Some Rock Bros. platform pedals

.....once I had the bike adjusted I raised the seat and took it for a test spin to figure out how the controls worked.....it was actually quite intuitive.  As I have reported, it has 5 electric assist modes while you are pedaling, a full electric mode which you control with a thumb activated  throttle button.  It also has, and I did not know this when I bought it, CRUISE CONTROL!  Once I was satisfied I understood its operation, I lowered the seat and turned it over to TLE.  She rode around the parking lot several times, and I heard her "oooohing and ahhhhing" as she rode circles around me.  Of course, the great thing is if the battery should go dead while on a long ride she can always utilize the 21 speeds she has available to return to home base.  For $700 and change I think we got a good deal, and I did purchase the three year warranty available for $39.  Right now the wheels are affixed to the bike via nuts, but over the next month I will convert them to quick release axles, which will eliminate the need for a wrench to remove the wheels.....must more convenient when repairing a flat tire on the road.  We'll add a bike rack, with a trunk bag, and the ability to add panniers (saddle bags) so we can carry groceries home from the store, if need be.

At 2 pm we were off in the VW to Brayden James' birthday party being held at Chuck E. Cheese in Rancho Cucamonga.  We arrived a little after 3 pm to find the party in full swing.....

Little Crosby, who was the birthday boy last Saturday

 Three of my girls

Brayden James, the birthday boy this Saturday.....4 years old!

 Crosby and Jamison

Brayden James with Mom....getting ready to blow out the candles

Chuck E. Cheese doing his thang......

......there was pizza, chicken, bread sticks, punch (beer for those of age), and entertainment by Chuck E. Cheese himself.  By 5 pm the party was winding down quickly, so we said our 'until next times' and headed for the barn.

We've thoroughly enjoyed our time in Riverside, and visiting with our kids, and their offspring, but we are ready for some down time in the desert.....here we come Borrego Springs!

Another ride, another project......

7:10 am - Real Saturday - February 1st - Riverside, CA - 43° F, 62% humidity, wind - CALM.....clear, blue skies this morning with a forecast high today of 80° F.

I love living in Riverside, if even only for a week and a half.  The opportunities for exercise are abundant.  Here at the Elks Lodge I am just a mile from the SART*, and about the same for the Mt. Rubidoux trailhead.  Since we arrived in Riverside I have already taken my first 20 mile bike ride in over a year, and Friday I set out to do another long ride.  I once again headed west on Jurupa (pronounced Harupa) to Palm, and then north to the SART.  Within minutes I was cruising northward toward San Bernardino.  I had already pre-determined I was not going to ride 20 miles again, but set a modest goal of 10 miles round trip.  About 5 miles into my journey, the turn around point if I was to do just 10 miles, I decided to go another 2.5 before turning to get in at least 15.  Just about that time I glanced to my right into a yard by which I have been riding for years where vintage motorhomes are stored, and what do I see.......

.....an early 80's Newell Classic, probably circa '83, or '84 sitting next to a Blue Bird Wanderlodge, also probably early 80's......what are the odds?  Pretty low since Newell only turns out around 25-30 units a year.  Very unexpected, and very cool.

I ended up doing just over 17 miles in total.....just about right......

 Still smiling after 17.2 miles

......in my first ride on Monday I averaged 11.9 miles per hour, but on Friday I hit an average of 13.6 mph for the 17.2 miles I covered, and incinerated some 1,023 caloric units in just one hour and 15 minutes of riding.....

.....last Sunday I ordered a 500 watt E-bike for TLE off eBay.  It has both pedal assist, as well as full on electric power with no pedaling.  It will come in very handy this summer in Alaska for short commutes into local towns, sightseeing jaunts, etc.....

.....originally the seller promised delivery by Monday, February 3rd, however, UPS got it to Rancho Cucamonga Friday afternoon.  We headed into my son's office around 1 pm to be there when it arrived, so I could unpack and assemble it before taking it home.  It arrived just after 3:30 pm, and I had it together in about 30 minutes.  It's a good looking entry level, full suspension, FOLDING E-bike with mechanical disc brakes. I'll spend a good part of Real Saturday tuning it up, and transferring some components from TLE's Cannondale F-600 (saddle, hydraulic brakes, etc.).

Another project I have been meaning to take care of while we are here in Riverside was to freshen up the black paint on our American Trailer tongue.  I spent some time applying masking tape to things I did not want paint to cover, and then sprayed on the new layer of Rustoleum gloss black......

......I let the paint dry while we were at my son's office, and removed the masking tape on our return.....it turned out pretty well......looks like somebody cares, right?

We have another grand child birthday Saturday afternoon for Brayden James (Sharon's son) who has just turned 4 years of age.  He is such an amazing little guy.  We have Superbowl 51 Sunday, and then Monday we head out of town to Borrego Springs for a month!

Thanks for stopping by!

Child to friend.......

6:39 am - Friday - January 31st - Riverside, CA - 44° F, 58% humidity, wind 5 mph out of the west by southwest......clear, blue, cool skies with a forecast high today of 75° F.

Thursday was the complete opposite of Wednesday......a slight breeze, but no 'hurricane' force winds, so our plans for Wednesday were implemented Thursday.....we hiked Mt. Rubidoux.  This time we parked on the south side of the mountain in the local sports park parking lot.  The overall hike is a little shorter.....only 3.29 miles in total length......but the trail is steeper, so you get the same workout......

......the air was startling in its clarity.....low humidity will do that......

....the CCC (California Conservation Corp) has been doing a lot of trail work, and landscaping along the many trails to the top.  In the picture above you can see the series of steps they have built on one of the dirt paths.......

At the top....the famous Cross in the background

A picture of Rancho Jurupa Regional Park where we spent 12 months as volunteer camp hosts (2011-2012)

Big solar farm along the Santa Ana River

......in all we covered 3.29 miles in 57 minutes averaging 3.5 mph, and gaining 487' in elevation.....

....after completing our hike we returned to the Newell where TLE gathered together our laundry and headed out to a local laundromat, and them stopped by Trader Joe's to pick up a few things before returning home a couple of hours later.  I spent part of the afternoon preparing the tongue on our American trailer to be repainted.  It's been a few years since I did this, and the paint is looking poor.  I have three spray cans of leftover gloss back paint which I will use to refresh the tongue paint.

We were treated to another beautiful sunset, after which we jumped in the VW to head into town to meet Kate and Nick at the new Salted Pig located now in the walking mall near the Mission Inn.....a great new location which will now offer outdoor dining as well as indoor dining.......

.....one of the reasons we love the Salted Pig is their craft beer, however, since they have moved to a new location they had to get their liquor license changed, and the new one has not come through yet, so no brews this night.....:-(.....the old location had just indoor dining, and the noise levels at times made it difficult to carry on a conversation.  The new location has much better acoustics, and we really like the new ambiance......

The new digs

Nick and Kate

......nonetheless, we had a great meal sans beer....I had their 30/30 Burger, which is made from ground ribeye.....amazing!  TLE had their MSG Burger which is ground slab bacon....OMG.  We had a wonderful time talking about 'cabbages and kings' as we always do.  We love all our children, as we should, but what is so cool is that they are all really interesting people, have all become good friends, and I love our wide ranging conversations.....Thursday evening was wonderful!  Sometimes it is difficult to transition from a parent/child relationship to a peer/friend relationship, but Thursday evening was just more evidence to me that we have successfully made that transition.  Thank you Kate and Nick for a great evening!

An inside job.....

7:26 am - Thursday - January 30th - Riverside, CA - 58° F, 22% humidity, wind 15 mph out of the east.....clear skies today with a forecast high of 74° F.

We had plans to be outdoors Wednesday, but 30 mph Santa Ana winds convinced us otherwise.  I wanted to ride the SART* north to San Bernardino and back, but riding into the 30 mph headwind for 10 miles had very little appeal for me.  Being housebound has its advantages when you have inside things to do, and I did.  I wrote about getting my Seiko Automatic Speed Timer watches serviced so I could sell them on eBay.  Listing a vintage watch on eBay is sort of daunting because of authenticity concerns.  As a result eBay asks for a lot of information, and a lot of pictures, so it takes a lot of time to complete each listing.  By the time I finished with the third listing it was time to get dressed and head out for TLE's hair appointment in Claremont scheduled for 1:30 pm.

We stopped off at my son's office on the way to drop off our final load of things we do not need to be carrying in the Newell and/or trailer anymore, and then headed across town on Arrow Route to Claremont arriving at Maxx Salon just before TLE's 1:30 pm appointment with Amanda.   Usually I sit out in the waiting room whilst TLE has her hair done, but I hadn't been able to talk with Amanda at Crosby's birthday party the past Saturday, so I pulled up a stool by Amanda's station and we talked non-stop for the entire 45 minutes.  Amanda is like one of our children (she and and our daughter, Sharon, have been friends since elementary school).

One of our favorite Claremont eateries is Back Abbey, just a few blocks from Maxx Salon, so once Amanda finished TLE's styling we headed directly there for a late lunch......

Back Abbey brews

....we haven't been out for brews and food in quite a while, so it was about time.  I had the special of the day....the Garlic Burger.....OMG, and  TLE had their Shrimp Po' Boy....both were off the charts good, and chasing them with our Brown Ale (I forget the actual name) brews really hit the spot, as 'they' say.

On our way home we stopped at the COSTCO in east Fontana just off the 210 FWY to pick up some coffee beans, and fill our gas tank.  While the wind in Claremont was hardly noticeable, it was blowing like a hurricane in Fontana, which is situated right below Cajon Pass which tends to funnel the Santa Ana Winds from the high desert down into the Inland Empire.

By the time the weary wanderers returned home it was just after 5 pm, and we were tired!  We basically changed into more comfortable clothing, sat down and relaxed for the rest of the evening, still full from our scrumptious Back Abbey lunch.

Thanks for stopping by!

The automatics.......

6:52 am - Wednesday - January 29th - Riverside, CA - 43° F,  79% humidity, wind 3 mph of the east by northeast......cool, clear this morning with a forecast high today of 69° F.

After our great hike to the top of Mt. Rubidoux Monday, the first in years, I decided to get my Cannondale Bad Boy out and take a 20 mile ride on the SART*.  Since we moved into our Newell Classic back in February of 2011, and lived at Rancho Jurupa Regional Park for one year I have ridden a few hundred miles on the SART*, but in the last couple of years not so much.  The SART stretches over 70 miles (currently from San Bernardino to Newport Beach following the path of the Santa Ana River with a 10 mile gap.....still to be finished) between Norco and Yorba Linda.  When I lived in Ontario, CA I often rode the stretch from Yorba Linda to Newport Beach and back.....a 62 mile round trip.  When we moved to Riverside I began to ride the northern stretch (Norco to San Bernardino), which passes right next to Mt. Rubidoux.

I left on my ride around 10:15 am and returned just before noon time having covered exactly 20 miles.......

You can see the snow capped San Bernardino Mountains

The Coyote Trail stretch of the trail in Norco

.....I haven't ridden 20 miles since I did it back in Burlington, VT with TLE back in October of 2018.  Just before we arrived at RORVR back in April we were staying at the Fontana/Rialto Elks Lodge and I rode 10 miles on the PET** a couple of times, so it's been over a year since I reached that bench mark.  As I began the ride I was wondering how I would do, but within minutes I was floating westbound down Jurupa Avenue to the trailhead at Martha McLean-Anza Narrow Park feeling like I could ride forever.  When I reached the Norco terminus of the SART, and made the turn around I had covered just over 9 miles.  I felt great, and like I could finish the final 10+ miles home.  I made it home with energy to spare.....

 Still smiling after 20 miles

.....as I sit here Wednesday morning composing this post I still feel fine....a little stiffness, but nothing unusual.

Back in my workaday life I used to collect Seiko Chronograph Automatic Speed Timer watches....automatic means it is a self wind.  I bought my first one brand new sometime in 1972.......

 The original - Model # 6139-6005

......this watch, introduced in May of 1969, is known at the first mass produced automatic chronograph.  Sometime in the late 80's it stopped working, and I bought another Seiko, and put the Speed Timer in my jewelry box to be fixed someday.  In the early 2000's I had it fixed, and had a new crystal installed.  I began to collect more of these beautiful watches, and at one time owned 8 of them.  I had a 'watch winder' which kept my collection wound all the time....it's not good for them to lay idle, like any mechanical thing.  About 3 years into our vagabond life I listed 4 of them on eBay, and was surprised that they went for about $300+ each....I paid about $100 per watch originally.  So, fast forward to December, 2019 I decided to sell the last 4 as I was not wearing them, and my 'watch winder' had broken.  On December 6th I  dropped off three of my four remaining Seiko Automatic Speed Timer watches at a watchmaker in Riverside that I have known for a couple of years to be cleaned, oiled, and adjusted, which included my original Navy Blue dial Seiko.  The other two are below......

Very rare salmon colored dial Seiko Automatic....this is the only one I have ever seen on eBay....Model # 6139-6002

The most popular of these Seikos.....called the Pogue Seiko (also Model # 6139-6002) after Col. Pogue, an astronaut, who wore one of these into space back in the early 70's.  This one has the day of the week in either English, or Arabic....I least I believe it is Arabic.
Arabic day of week...pretty cool, huh?

.....I received a call about a week ago that the three watches were ready for pickup, so Tuesday I drove over to the watchmaker on Mission Inn Blvd. to retrieve them.  At that time I delivered the fourth Seiko Automatic (black dial) to have a new stem/crown installed as the original fell out a few years ago.  I'll list the ones I have now on eBay today, but if any of you are interested in any of these watches I'll give you a good deal.

I spent the rest of the afternoon researching closed auctions on eBay to see what they are going for now, and the prices seem to range from a low of $300 for average to good condition to over $1,200 for pristine condition.  The salmon dial one is in near pristine condition with original crystal (scratch free) and Seiko bracelet.  The Pogue Seiko (gold dial) has minor scratches on the crystal, and stainless steel case, and has the original Seiko bracelet.  The Navy Blue one has a new crystal, and an after market look alike bracelet, but I still have the original Seiko bracelet, which I will include.  The case shows some wear and scratches as I wore it every day for a dozen years before it quit working.

Thanks for stopping by!
