7:40 am - Thursday - August 31st - 50º F, humidity 67%, wind 3 mph out of the east northeast....partly cloudy with a forecast high in Gardiner, MT of 78º (40% chance of rain), and for Mammoth Hot Springs, WY 72º F.....a slight break in the mini heatwave. Today is the 45th birthday of our firstborn, Chris.....I have to say that typing this sentence is almost surreal to me......intellectually I understand I have a 45 year old son, but I don't feel old enough to have a child that old. TLE and I are so proud of him and all he has accomplished.....he is a good man, a very good husband, and a wonderful father.....Happy birthday Chris. In addition, today is also the birthday of my oldest grandson, Christopher, born on the same day as his father 17 years past....WOW....17 years old today!
As is oft the case whenever I sleep in a new bed, in an unfamiliar location I don't sleep very well, and that is how it went for me Tuesday night/Wednesday morning......a little tossing and turning. At any rate I was awake by 6 am, but stayed in bed until after 7 knowing I needed to be back in Gardiner for my haircut at 10 am. Ultimately TLE and were packed and on our way home by 8:30, arriving a little after 9 am, and I was on my way into Gardiner for my long awaited haircut. Usually I get a haircut every 4-5 weeks, but it had been about 7 weeks since July 10th and my hair was getting quite unruly. There is only one person in Gardiner who cuts hair and that is Cari Theurer, and she only cuts hair 3 days each week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).....I contacted her about 10 days ago and Wednesday at 10 am was the first opening she had, so I took it. There was no way I was driving to Bozeman (72 miles distant), or even Livingston (52 miles away) just for a haircut!
I arrived at Cari's salon (located inside the 'Wash Tub Laundromat') just a few minutes before 10 am and was on my way out the door 25 minutes later after having secured another appointment for September 28th.....need to be sure my hair is presentable for my son's wedding on October 7th.
We had the 'CLOSE' shift Wednesday and subsequently reported for work about 15 minutes ahead of our start time (1:30 pm).....the store was pretty quiet, and it remained so for the rest of the day. Yup, we have turned the corner and the tourist trade is beginning its annual decline. Effective Monday, September 4th, the store hours will change from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm to 8 am to 8 pm......we are awaiting the new work schedule to see what shift we will have.....one thing we know is we will be reducing our work days down to 4 per week, with 3 days off each week.....now we can really begin to explore the southern reaches of YNP!
As can be expected with the end of the season in sight our co-workers are beginning to talk about their winter plans. Over the next month we will begin to disperse to the four corners of the world heading for new adventures. As for me, I am trying to stay focused on the present.....we have 5 wonderful weeks left in which to explore more of Yellowstone National Park.
Thanks for stopping by!
