6:57 am - Wednesday - August 9th - 45º F, humidity 79%, wind 2 mph out of the south southeast.....partly cloudy.....forecast high for Gardiner, MT today is 73º.....for Mammoth Hot Springs, YNP, WY 71º F.......50% chance of rain.

After covering almost 15 miles hiking Monday we decided to take a day off Tuesday.....well, TLE decided to take a day off.....I decided to take a mountain bike ride along the Yellowstone River.  It took me a while to get motivated, but by 11:30 I began to get ready, and was on my way by 11:40.

It is about a 2 mile ride on surface streets to the trailhead, but once you get off the road you feel like you are 100 miles from anywhere.  The trail runs north along the west side of the Yellowstone River.  I was originally told when we first arrived here that it ran for some 30 miles, and that the trail ran along the old highway bed, however, that is not the case.  The trail ends about 3.5 miles north at a small creek, and the road bed is, obviously, an old railroad right of way.  All that being said it is a relatively flat ride.....you do lose elevation over the 3.5 miles just as the river does, but it is not significant....maybe a couple hundred feet over the 3.5 miles.

It took me about 35 minutes to reach the end the trail at which time I took a few pictures to memorialize the event.......

......I was back at the Newell by 1:05 pm having taken 1 hour and 15 minutes to do the 11.5 mile round trip.  You'll notice in many of the pictures I have taken the past few days that there is a decided haze in the distance......there are fires to the south of us, not in Yellowstone National Park, that are affecting the air clarity and quality.

Later in the afternoon after I had taken my shower we drove into the Gardiner Market to do a 'BIG' shopping....it has really been awhile since we have done that and the pantry shelves were beginning to look a little bare.

The temperatures here in Gardiner, MT for the next 10 days are all in the 70's, with the overnight lows dipping into the high 30's at least one time during that time span.....

.....and there is a chance of thunderstorms the next few days.  The weather is definitely changing and there is that crisp feeling to the air each morning that I associate with the approach of Fall weather.

Well, today, Wednesday, we do our first 'MID2' shift.....9:30 am to 5:30 pm.....it will be nice to get off work so early!

Thanks for stopping by!
