2018 In Review - Part 3 - The road to Campbellsville, KY

It is past time for Part 3 of 2018 in Review, so here goes:

On September 15th we said our goodbyes to Tony, Janet and Jack, dropped the trailer on the Newell hitch and began our short journey off Mount Desert Island along its oh so rough, narrow roads to Ellsworth where we spent the night at the local Walmart......

.....we awoke to a heavy ground fog on the 16th, but by late morning it had burned off so we decided to continue our journey southward to Portland, ME....

....we dry camped at the Cabela's in Portland, ME for several days and did some local sightseeing, including an afternoon at Allagash Brewing Company which brews my favorite Belgian White.....

.....Allagash White, of course!  This is one of the funkiest breweries we have visited, and we spent about 4 hours there just sitting in the sunshine, and listening to their very cool musical playlist.....

.....at the recommendation of good friends we also visited a local eatery called Duckfat where they serve these incredible french fries, fried, of course, in duck fat.....what a great recommendation!  We hung out there for a couple of hours enjoying the fries, and brews.....

.....then it was on to the great state of New Hampshire to visit another iconic tourist destination, Mt. Washington!  You can read about that adventure here.....

.....after Mt. Washington we visited a couple of local waterfalls, and a covered bridge.....

.....next up was the state of Vermont......after a rain day we continued our journey westward into Vermont, where we spent several days in Burlington at the local Elks Lodge (30 amp electrical only) taking long walks, a 20+ mile bicycle ride, visiting several local eateries/breweries, and just enjoying the shores of Lake Champlain.....

.....we loved our time in Burlginton, but soon it was time to move on to another state...Rhode Island.  Our Jello plan called for us to make the southeast drive over two days, but by the time we arrived at our tentative stopping point I still felt like driving, and we continued on all the way to the Elks Lodge in Smithfield, RI.  That was sort of a mistake as we ran into terrible traffic around the Boston area delaying our arrival at the Elks Lodge until almost sundown, but we finally made it and quickly settled in for several days of sightseeing.....

Smithfield, RI Elks Lodge

.....we had to drop the trailer at this Elks Lodge, but were happy to have water and 30 amp electrical for our stay......

......as had been the case for most of our journey since leaving Southwest Harbor it rained about half the time we were in Rhode Island, but we did not let that stop us from taking hikes, and sightseeing.  On our first full day in Rhode Island we drove into Provident, in the rain, for lunch at the Trinity Brewing Company.....

....on our second full day we drove south to Newport, RI to spend the day seeing sights.....

There was the ubiquitous lighthouse....Beavertail Lighthouse

.....there was a great lunch with great brews at a Newport pub called O'Briens.....

.....there was a tour of the 'Gilded Age' mansions on the Newport coastline.....

.....another late lunch in Smithfield at Blackie's Bull Dog Tavern, just down the street from the Elks Lodge.....

.....and then there was a visit to Plymouth Rock, and then Cape Cod.....

......next up on our agenda was Connecticut.....we found a cool place to stay for two days on Harvest Hosts called Bishop's Orchard in Guilford, CT.  Our two goals for our brief 2 day stay there was to visit the home of ESPN in Bristol, CT and then travel over to Hartford, CT to visit the Mart Twain home, and museum......

Loved the Mark Twain home and museum!

Late lunch at Hooker Brewing Company in Hartford

....of course, if you are in the northeast, and this close to NYC you must visit right?  But where to stay in an RV?  We found this cool RV park right on the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ called Liberty Harbor RV Park.....very, very pricey, but very right across the river from the World Trade Center......

Liberty Harbor RV Park....we had to drop the trailer in their storage yard....$350 for three days just for the trailer!

......our good friend Michael Viccari whom we met at Amazon in Campbellsville 6 years ago lives in Newark, NJ and met us for lunch just after we arrived, and then took us on a whirlwind tour of Newark, and then NYC utilizing the Holland Tunnel.....

Michael Viccari....a good man, and very good friend

.....soon it was time to leave Jersey City, NJ and head for our 48th state....Delaware.  We found a local Elks Lodge in New Castle, DE where we stayed for free for 3 days plugged into a 30 amp receptacle.....
