The long ride.....
7:18 am - Wednesday - November 9th - Glamis North Hot Springs, CA - 62° F, 47% humidity, wind 16 mph out of the north.....mostly cloudy today with a forecast high of 69° F. Rained on and off from 6 pm Tuesday until the early morning hours Wednesday. The view today.....↴
Should the need arise, and one of our customers breaks down out in the desert, it is my job to go and 'rescue' them. It could be a flat tire, or they've rolled the RAZR, or they killed the battery, or.....use your imagination....people have been known to do some stupid stuff with ATV's. At any rate I need to be able to find them in about 60+ square miles of desert, so it is needful for me, and TLE to learn the different trail routes, and landmarks so we can get to them in their time of need in a somewhat timely manner. On Sunday we had arranged with Kyle to give us a RAZR tour beginning at 8 am on Tuesday (his day off). To be sure we did not find ourselves in need of rescue we took two of the units....Kyle drove one of the Polaris 4 seaters, and TLE and I chose one of the red Kawasaki 2 seaters. We loaded the 'go bag', a 3 ton floor jack, and tow straps into the backseat of the 4 seater, and were off, literally, in a cloud of dust for our '4 hour tour'....lol.

The big shopping.....
6:28 am - Tuesday - November 8th - Glamis North Hot Springs, CA - 63° F, 69% humidity, wind 7 mph out of the south by southeast.....crystal clear, blue, sunny skies today with a forecast high of 76° F. On this date in 2013 we were somewhere between Fallon, and Carson City, NV driving at night....something we rarely do....and caught this amazing sunset......↴
Monday was our first day not working after 5 days of a whirlwind learning curve with Bob and Casey. Unfortunately, with DST making the sun rise an hour earlier than before we were awake before 6 am....doh! It kind of threw my whole day off, but oh well, it is what it is.
We hadn't yet driven south on US-111 to Niland, Calipatria, and Brawley, and we needed to do a BIG shopping, so we began our drive down to Brawley around 9 am, stopping in Niland to check out the new grocery store there (its only 17 miles from GNHS, so might be an option for a few necessities in a pinch), before continuing south through Calipatria, which is actually a pretty large, and seemingly more prosperous town than Niland appears to be, arriving at the Vons Supermarket in Brawley just before 10 am.
This is probably one of the nicest Vons we've ever been in (they even have a Starbucks), and amazingly well stocked! We took our time walking up and down each and every aisle. When we finally reached the cashier station the large basket was full....ouch, that was expensive.....can you spell 'INFLATION' ($301....no alcohol, and to think we actually saved $54 by using our Vons Club card during checkout)?!
We were back on the road by 11 am heading north, reaching Niland just before noon time, so we decided to stop off at a local diner called Buckshot Deli and Diner (4.5 stars on 104 Yelp reviews).....
.....they essentially serve two types of food.....Hamburgers, and Mexican. TLE had their Ortega Burger, and I their Chile Relleno. Both dishes were above average, and all the ingredients were fresh. We would be right at 4 stars on this one. An humorous side note.....the server brought our check, and then cleared the table. After she left I looked at the bill and was shocked to see a total of $77....wait, what? I called her back over to the table and asked if there wasn't some error on the check, and then put down this on the table.....
We were home before 1 pm, and had all of our purchases inside the Newell within 10 minutes, but it took TLE another hour to put everything away....lol. I took a nap, and then puttered around in the trailer putting stuff away that I had taken out of the cabinet, and putting tools away that I had left out on the workbench.....very, very unlike me, but the last 5 days were hectic, so I forgave myself.
TLE and I spent another lovely evening on the 'lido deck' playing Backgammon until almost 8 pm. I was hot on this night taking 5 out of 6, or 7 games. Usually we play pretty evenly when it comes to Backgammon. Now 'Phase 10' is another story.....TLE whips me 3 out of 4 times, but the games are getting closer.
Thanks for stopping by!

On our own......
7:21 am - Monday - November 7th - Niland, CA - 60° F, 65% humidity, wind 6 mph out of the south by southeast.....partly cloudy today with a forecast high of 78° F. On this date in 2017 TLE and I had just arrived at the Desert View entrance of Grand Canyon NP to work at the General Store for the winter......↴
Bob and Casey headed back to Durango, CO early Sunday morning, leaving TLE and I to run the operation. We had one half day rental scheduled at 9 am, so we were up, dressed, and opening the office by 8 am. While we awaited the arrival of our guests I began to disassemble the passenger door on one of the 2 seater RAZR's which was very hard to open. In order to open the door one had to lift up, and then pull out hard. I figured the hinges needed a shim to raise the door every so slightly. I've never had one of these apart, but as I began to remove screws and fasteners it became clear they were designed intuitively, and would be easy to reassemble.....
....just about the time I finished our customer arrived to complete their paperwork, and provide a damage deposit of $1,500. Once the unit is returned, and it is determined it is undamaged, the deposit is credited back to their credit card. If you are under 25 years old (21-25....no rental if you are under 21) the deposit is $3,000.
.....TLE was off work shortly after 1 pm as we had no more rentals scheduled for Sunday, but I worked 2 more hours doing some service work on the RAZR's, organizing all of the tools/rescue equipment, and giving the Mule a thorough washing before calling it a day.
