Since we arrived in Savannah the weather has been mostly cool, and clear with a few partly cloudy days thrown in for good measure. The one time we had rain it happened at night. Monday was a different matter all together. It opened up cloudy, stayed that way all day with the smell of rain in the air, then around 10 pm last night the skies opened up with such a vengeance that we lost the satellite TV signal for about 15, or 20 minutes.
Was that it? Is that all there was to Monday? Well, no, but it's what is stuck in the front of my mind. There was more...a lot more....even though it was cloudy Monday with the threat of rain we did get out to do a little junkin' at the local thrift shops.
We also needed to visit West Marine (a national chain of marine supply stores) to order some Chevron Delo 100 SAE 40 weight oil. You will recall that we switched over from Shell Rotella Heavy Duty SAE 40 weight when we had the oil changed at Choo Choo Express Garage back in December, and I needed to get a few gallons of the Delo 100 to be able to refill the oil reservoir. I could have could ordered it online, but then there is a big shipping charge due to the weight of 6 gallons of oil, and then the question of where to have it mailed. I was hoping the local marine store would have it in stock, but they did not, however, they do have 7 gallons at their warehouse in Jacksonville, FL of which 6 gallons will be at the local Savannah store by Friday morning. As a result of this we are extending our stay here in Savannah at least 2 more days, if not 3.
After we finished at the West Marine store we headed out to check out a few thrift stores.....not that we really need anything, but we enjoy the hunt, and sometimes you find something really cool you didn't know you needed......lol! In between the first and second thrift store I spied an interesting liquor store (Largo Beverage Mart) that boasts on their outdoor sign 100 craft beers....well, they are not lying, and they do have a very interesting selection. I selected five individual 22 oz bottles of (in no particular order): Heavy Seas Great Pumpkin Ale, Sam Adams Thirteenth Hour (stout), Ipswich Oatmeal Stout, Southern Tier Crem Brulee Stout, and Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout.
TLE had 3 thrift stores in her sights, so we rummaged through a couple, and I did find a couple of glasses at the second (Goodwill) we'll use for some of our higher end craft beer purchases, but that was the of our thrift store purchases for the day. After finding the glassware at the Goodwill we headed downtown to have lunch at The Distillery....the last time we visited their tapper was out of commission, so we wanted to give them another try, and of course it was back in service this day. We grabbed an al fresco table and ordered a couple pints of Victory Donnybrook (Irish Dry Stout) to start off (only about 3.6% abv), and a Georgia Fried Wild Shrimp appetizer which was amazing......6 large shrimp were just barely enough. Next TLE ordered their Cream of Crab (which she loved) and I ordered their Classic BLT on marble rye....wow! Our second pint choice was Belhaven Scottish Stout (about 7% abv)......yummy! We sat enjoying the cool air, and talking for over an hour.....even though it was a little cloudy at the time, it was still warm enough to sit outside without a coat on.
Eventually we walked over a few blocks toward the Savannah River to check out another Goodwill Store, and a place called the "Salt Table"....they stock interesting salts and other seasonings, as well as tea from around the world. We didn't find anything of note at the 2nd Goodwill, but TLE did buy some Himalayan Pink Salt at the Salt Table. In all we walked about 1.5 miles......we needed a little walk after that lunch.
We made it back to the car around 4 pm.....where did the day go....the last time I looked at my watch it was 12:30....by the time we got home it was after 4;30. Some mail my son mailed to me arrived just after we returned home, so I dove into that and took care of a few things that needed attention.......suddenly it was after 8 pm....and shortly after that the rain, thunder and lightning arrived with a fury. When the rain is heavy enough to knock out our satellite reception it gets my attention!
We watched a previously recorded "Mentalist" episode, and then watched "Bones" live at 11 pm....yep, still on that pesky west coast feed. After that we trundled off to slumberland with another nice day in the books.
Before I close this post out....just got a message from my son advising our Passports have arrived at his office, so he will send them Priority Mail to us later Tuesday and we should have them by Friday. Also got an e-mail from Kaitlin at the Indy 500 advising we have been hired from May 11t to May 26th as workampers! We'll be working Gate #2, the main entrance, which she says is the best station to work. Here's a picture of our work station....
Thanks for stopping by!
