The plans, the jello and UPS

We arrived in Bishop, CA this past Saturday with our plans up in the air........my vision of boondocking along the Eastern Sierras on life support, and needing to replace our shore power cord......planning to stay here one, or two days at most.....and here it is Wednesday morning and we are still here.....how did that happen?

Well, initially we waffled between paying for one night, or two nights, and that depended on whether we could acquire the replacement parts for our shore power......well, within a few hours that was decided for us as no one (who was open) had the correct power cord.  As I reported a few days ago I was able to find a replacement 50 amp male plug, but still needed the cord, so we opted to pay for two nights hoping we could find the cord at an RV supply store in town that would be open again on Monday.  The problem was, if they don't have the cord then what are we going to do?  So, I ordered a replacement shore power cord from Amazon Prime on Saturday hoping it might arrive by Monday.......no such luck.  The website indicated that the earliest I could get it would be Tuesday IF I paid an additional $10 for "one day" service......wait, what?  I ordered it on Saturday afternoon....wouldn't "one day service" be Monday?  Apparently not.......my free two day shipping, which I get automatically with Amazon Prime would not get it to my location in Bishop until Wednesday....doesn't that sound more like 3-4 day shipping?  Nevertheless, the extended our stay until Tuesday hoping for an early delivery.

It's not that we have not thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Bishop.....we have enjoyed our time here, and are grateful for the extra time to finally explore Bishop just a little bit.....it's just that it is so darned cold.  I've been dreaming lately of waking up to balmy breezes wafting through my bedroom window, and knowing I would not have to turn on a heater of any type at any time during the day, or night.......that has been my wish, my dream......what is the old quote......."If wishes were horses, beggars would ride"?

Since we were expecting our package to be delivered to the coach, and not the Fairgrounds office we hung around hour after hour hoping to receive our delivery at any time, and then pull anchor to move further south, but by noon time it had not arrived, plus the wind was blowing in the mid to high 20's......I did not want to spend a few hours driving in a strong cross wind........so I walked, reluctantly, over to the office to pay for one more night..

About 1445 I got a text message advising my package had been delivered......what?  Not to me!  Our site is in full view of the office, and neither of us had seen an UPS truck......nevertheless, I decided to walk quickly (it is cold and windy!) over to the office to see if they had it.....they did! I carried the box back to the trailer, opened it to confirm what we had received was what we had ordered, and it was.

So, now it is close to 1500 hours, and we had already paid for another night......what to do?  A friend had recommended we check out 'Holy Smoke Texas BBQ', which is just a couple of blocks from the Fairgrounds.  I checked them on Yelp and saw that they get 4.5 stars on 548 reviews......again, wow.  Seemed like a 'no brainer' to us so we got dressed and headed over......much to our chagrin they are closed on Tuesdays......it never occurred to us that they would be closed on a Tuesday.  Okay, our fallback position was Mountain Rambler Brewing, where we had eaten or first day in Bishop.

One of the tests, in our opinion, for a micro brewery is does their food match up with the quality of their brews?  With this in mind we both ordered different entrees.....TLE the soup of the day which was potato, sausage, sauerkraut soup (not one of my favorites, but TLE loved it), and for me a flatbread pizza (heirloom tomatoes, onions, Italian sausage).  We each ordered a pint of their Peaklet Porter.  Once again we were blown away by both the brews and the food.

Who's going to get that last swallow?

On our way home we stopped off at the local NAPA auto parts store to pick up some insulated crimp connectors that will work for heavy gauge wire such as our 50 amp shore power cord.....I didn't have any of these when I made my temporary repair at Mono Lake, so I felt it was necessary to fill in that gap in my maintenance supplies.....man, those 'puppies' are expensive...$27 for 10 of them!

We spent the evening with heaters running full blast once again.....time to move to the coast!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Clarke, I for UPS . Times are changing but Sat and Sunday aren't "days "in the shipping business even ordering it on Sat , it probably wasn't actually shipped / picked up until Monday . Not that Amazon wouldn't want us to work Sat and Sun too 😉 I'm sure that's coming !
Good luck on the search for warmth!
