Last night the jets from the local Naval Airbase flew overhead until after midnight. That is the only drawback I can see to living on Whidbey Island. These jets are the ones used to jam radar, communications, etc. and they are also the loudest jets in the fleet we are told. I can attest to how LOUD they are. I guess that falls under the "cost of freedom". As a result I over slept a little getting up at 7am, and missed a little of the Tour d' France, but was in time to see the last 15km.
Today was our day to take a day trip to Port Townsend via the Coupeville to Port Townsend Ferry, and we kept that date! We wanted to catch the 11am ferry so we left here around 9:50am, giving ourselves plenty of time to ride the 6.1 miles to the ferry, and arrive by 10:30am. We made it in about 20 minutes. On the ride down we rode through a heavy mist, and were a little wet when we first arrived, but dried off quickly. We purchased our tickets at the automated kiosk, and waited for boarding time. These Washington State ferries really do run remarkably on time, and sure enough our ferry pulled in at 10:45am, and unloaded, and then loaded in 15 minutes.....very efficient for government work. This was the first time in a couple of decades that we have "WALKED ON" a ferry.
Departing the Coupeville terminal at exactly 11am
On the ferry
Our bike parked with the big rigs!
We headed south out of town to Point Wilson to see the lighthouse, but there were no tours today, so we just got a glimpse of it from the locked gate.
From Point Wilson we rode in a big loop back into town to a little Mexican restaurant we had spied on our way through the old town area......La Isla Family Mexican Restaurant and Cantina.
Waiting for the chips and salsa
Just before we stopped to eat a Facebook friend told us we should check out Port Townsend Brewing Company, which was located about 1.1 miles from La Isla, so after lunch we headed there to sample some brews! I had their Porter, and Elaine had a Straight Stout. Both were very tasty, and we are glad we checked them out.
We wanted to catch the 3:45pm ferry back to Coupeville, and we had an hour and a half so we rode back downtown to a used book store Elaine had spied on our first pass through town. While she was in the bookstore I was fiddling around with the bike and noticed, much to my chagrin, that the rear tire had worn down to the cords in one spot, and was in danger of failing. Right next store to the bookstore was "The Broken Spoke", a bike shop, so I walked in to ask if they stocked 27" inch road tires......not many bikes today use a 27" tire, but, God bless them, they did stock them, and I was able to purchase a replacement tire for only $12! How timely was my discovery! And thank you Jason for your help in solving my problem. We highly recommend this bike shop.
See what I mean?!
At last it was time to high tail it for the ferry, but we had to stop on the way and take a picture of this cool coffee house. What a great name, and coincidentally, reflects exactly my philosophy of life.....lol!!
We boarded the home bound ferry at 3:30pm, and were back on Whidbey Island by 4:15pm. Our 6.1 mile ride home took us about 25 minutes.
All in all it was a nice day trip. We ran into two separate couples doing multi day tours on Cannondale tandems.....what a small world. Duncan and his wife were from England originally, but are now living on Vancouver Island. What a nice couple!
That was our day.....thanks for stopping by!
