Out of Newell House......

8:14 am - Wednesday - February 9th - Newell House, AZ - 44° F, 20% humidity, wind 2 mph out of the north....we have clear, blue, sunny skies today with a forecast high of 77° F.  On this date in 2014 I awoke in Riverside Community Hospital after an all night emergency surgery session repairing double hernias......↴

After 8 full days inside Newell House our '82 Newell Classic emerged back into the daylight with 8 new airbags, 4 new Koni adjustable shocks, reoriented rear solar panels, and freshly polished ALCOA wheels.  It is so nice to be back outside again where I can feel the breeze wafting through my bedroom window at night, where the sounds of the night can be heard once again, and I can walk directly outside the Newell to feel the sun on my face.  Don't get me wrong, having the ability to have done all that work out of the elements, and in a well lit, clean environment was a real blessing.  Can you imagine me removing, and installing those airbags and shocks lying in the dirt at some RV park? That would have added a difficulty factor beyond my imagination.

At any rate, right after posting my latest missive I opened the large rollup door shielding us from the elements, disconnected shore power, turned over the big Detroit Diesel 6v92, rolled out of Newell House, and then, with TLE's assistance, backed slowly into our full hookup site, outdoors, once again.  After reconnecting to shore power, water and sewer TLE and I went back into Newell House to clean up the mess we had made on the shop floor, and were finished in about 1/2 hour.  We next deployed the patio awning, redeployed the yards lights, and then took a 1 mile walk around the property (4 laps = 1 mile).

Around mid afternoon I discovered my laptop had completely discharged, which, being plugged into shore power, should not have been the case.  I checked the outlet to find it 'dead'.  My first thought is "Here we go again".  As I began to walk from one outlet to another from the front of the coach to the rear of our bedroom all I found was dead outlets.  The only outlet working in the front of the coach was TLE's outlet by her passenger chair, so I plugged in the laptop to recharge it, and then retrieved my multi meter to begin checking circuits in the electrical service panel.  My service panels has 6 duplex breakers, which gives me 12 circuits.  I discovered all the even numbered breakers had no power coming out of them, even though none of them had been tripped.  The odds of three duplex breakers going bad simultaneously is astronomical, and highly unlikely.  I next checked the two incoming 50 amp lines, and found the problem.....there was no power coming into the coach on the black leg (one is red, and one is black), so that pointed to an external problem.  From there I went to the 50 amp plug we were using (there are two available) and checked the breakers to find they were both fine.  Next we went inside Newell House to check the main service panel to find no breakers had been tripped there either......hmmmm?  Ultimately we found that even though the breakers were fine, no power was coming out of one of the legs in the actual plug, so we just moved our shore power cord to the other 50 amp box, and immediately had power restored to the entire Newell.....whew!  Apparently there is a problem with the plug in the box were were using, so that will have to be checked out on Wednesday.  Meanwhile, we have full power in the Newell once again, and a repeat of our recent electrical issues was not happening, much to our mutual relief!

I've got a few more small projects to complete over the next 10 days after which we hope to be able to get into 'All Aboard America' over in Mesa, AZ to get the coach serviced, which will involve an oil change, filter change, coolant change, and an inspection and lubing of the drivetrain.  Once that is completed our Jello plan is to head back to the Anza Borrego Desert for a few weeks before moving back to the Elks Lodge in Fontana to attend the wedding of our oldest granddaughter, Cynthia, to Daniel Perez on April 2nd.  From there we will begin a slow journey to our summer job in Northern California.

  1. From the picture at the top of the post, I thought you had landed in the hospital. Glad to read that was years ago.
