I can't believe it.....

6:18 am - Sunday - July 10th - Likely, CA - 50° F, 62% humidity, wind - CALM out of the4 north by northeast....crystal clear, blue, sunny skies today with a forecast high of 90° F.  On this date in 2017 TLE and I were lunching at Bridger Brewing Company in Bozeman, MT.....↴

Saturday, July 9th will down in golfing lore for hours, if not days....it was the day I, Clarke Hockwald, won the weekly putting contest against 31 other contestants, but I get ahead of myself.

I began Saturday at 7 am once again staging the 5 Club Car electrics, and 10 Yamaha gassers.  It would not be a busy day, but I would be busy nonetheless.  Once I was sure all well set at the Clubhouse I headed out on the John Deere riding lawn mower to mow the tee boxes at 3, 15, and 16, but in the opposite order.  I start on the back 9 because at 9 am none of the golfers has finished the front 9 yet, and by the time I get the tee boxes at 16, and 15 done and move on to hole 3 all the morning golfers would be past, and that is how it worked out.

I was back at the Clubhouse by 11 am after a 2 hour circuit of the course.  I puttered around for 30 minutes before relieving TLE for her lunch hour, then spent most of my lunch hour putting on the putting green.  Jose changes out the 5 holes on the putting green just before lunch, so I'm able to get a feel for how the different holes are putting.  After 20 minutes of practice I was back to work.

There are three large lawns up the hill where our permanent residents stay during the summer, and they need to be mowed at least once a week.  Usually Walt is the one who mows them, but he left them for me this week.  I was just finishing the third lawn when the mowing blades on the Husqvarna caught up a wire cable left in the deep grass, and brought the mower to a stop....doh!  Almost done.  I was able to get the cable partially untangled, but finally had to drive it back down the hill to the 'Sick Bay' so Bob and I can take care of it Sunday morning.

By this time it was 2 pm, and time to begin washing the returned golf carts of which there were 9.  I got them done by 3:20 pm, and returned to the cart shack for the night.  I'll have 3 more to wash Sunday morning.

I headed home to take a shower, and then return in time for the 4 pm start of the putting contest.  As I say previously, there were 32 folks, including moi, entered.  I easily won the first round, but was tied going to the last hole of the second round.  I made a great first putt, easily sinking my second, while my opponent just missed a long putt.  The next round I was up 2-1 going to the 5th hole, and tied that hole to advance to the 4th round.  In the fourth round, which consisted of the final four golfers in the contest, I sank my first putt to win the first hole, then lost the second hole, tied the third hole, then won the 4th, and 5th holes to advance to the final.  I was leading by 1 as we played the 5th hole, and made a terrific putt leaving just 6 inches for my second putt.  My opponent successfully knocked my ball away from the hole while her ball went into the hole...doh....so we went to a one hole playoff.....one putt, closest to the hole.  The hole designated was 40 feet away.  I won coin toss, and had my opponent go first.  She putted it well, but too hard, and it rolled off the green. All I had to do was put my ball within a few feet of the hole.  My putt ended up 2 feet from the hole, making me the winner of the $44 first prize....no one could believe I won, and neither could I, but you know, every dog has his day!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Congratulations, Clarke! Your post took me back to the days of my youth 50+ years ago when I competed in putting contests at the local miniature golf course. Always great fun and the feeling you get when winning is pure joy. Sounds like you experienced both fun and joy too!
