6:32 am - Monday - 46º F, humidity 82%, wind 2 mph out of the south....partly cloudy with a forecast high today of 83º F near PaicInes, CA.
So, what do you do on a Sunday morning in an unfamiliar location? Well, one thing we like is to eat breakfast out periodically, and we were concerned that due to the extreme rural nature of SB that we would have to drive 15-20 minutes into Hollister to find such a place......not so fast! We had passed a restaurant coming and going from Hollister in Tres Pinos called Flap Jack's, which is about 11 miles from SB, and about 2/3 of the way to Hollister. I looked them up on Yelp, our main go to source for restaurant reviews, and saw they had only a 3 star rating. Then I began to read the reviews.....something weird is going on with the reviews of this restaurant. They are either a 4, or a 5, or a 1 star rating......virtually nothing in between. I noted that the ownership had recently changed, and wondered if some in the local area were unhappy about that. The 4, and 5 star ratings were usually quite long reviews, whereas the 1 star ratings were one, or two sentences at most. At any rate we decided to give them a chance and drove over about 9:30 am.......
......as we parked we noticed they had an alfresco dining area, but it looked full, however, upon entering and asking if any alfresco seating were available we were immediately seated in the last table available outside. Our server appeared within minutes to take our beverage and breakfast order.....we received our coffee within a couple of minutes, and our breakfast 10 minutes later......very, very good service on a very busy Sunday morning! Our server continued to return to our table to inquire about our needs every 5-10 minutes the entire time we were there. The restaurant was full inside and out by the time we departed near 10:30. I had their Huevos Rancheros which I thoroughly enjoyed.....it ranked right up there in the top 3 I have ever ordered. TLE had their Eggs Benedict and declared the Hollandaise Sauce to be freshly made, and almost as good as hers. So, two of the main complaints Yelp reviewers had were service and a lack of fresh ingredients......in my personal opinion that is baloney. We heard other patrons expressing their positive feelings about both service and the quality of the food.
We were back home by 11 am, after spending a few minutes searching in vain for the USPS in Paicines. Employee mail is not received here at SB, and we must acquire our own P. O. Box in Paicines to get letters and packages sent to us via the USPS.......there is no mail delivery at all to SB but UPS and FedEx do deliver. We found out later that the Paicines USPS is located inside the country store in Paicines. At any rate, we will stop there on our way back to TVC Monday to pick up a P. O. Box application.
Upon our return we took a walk around SB in search of a suitable RV site in the event our transfer request is approved.....fingers crossed! Ultimately we decided that we need a site with plenty of shade as we are told it can get into the 100's F on occasion. We found a few sites to check over the course of the day to see how much shade they got at various times in the day, particularly in the afternoon......we finally settled on site 491, which has shade most of the day......
It also has a 50 amp pedestal....we'll be glad we have that this summer
.....I know it looks narrow in the pictures, but the site actually extends quite a ways past those trees on the right, and there are no RV sites to the right, just 3 cabins. As a bonus we also have a view of the southern sky at the rear of our site for our satellite TV.....perfect!
Around 7:30 pm we took our act outside to sit on the porch and watch the sun set in the west......our porch at the 'Peacock' cabin gets late afternoon sun until that time. We sat talking about our uncertain future, but in a positive way. We hope our transfer into SB is approved this week, but in the event it isn't we will move on to plan B, C and D until we have a new plan.
We've had a lovely interlude here at SB, and are hoping we will return soon for the balance of the summer.....keeping our fingers crossed, and hoping for the best!
Thanks for stopping by!

ReplyDeleteYelp and Trip Advisor are two places I frequent as well but it is really hard to determine which comments are genuine or just 'disgruntled' former employees.
