The Red Ocotillo revisited......

7:36 am - Tuesday - December 21st - Anza Borrego Desert, CA - 46° F, 31% humidity, wind 2 mph out of the northwest......heavy cloud cover today with a forecast high of 67° F.  On this date in 2017 we awoke to snow on the ground at the Grand Canyon......↴

.....today, for those who might be interested, is the final 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.

We still felt so good after back to back days of hiking we decided to pull out the eBikes and ride into Borrego Springs  Monday for lunch.  We've eaten breakfast at the Red Ocotillo (Yelp gives them a solid 4 stars on 348 reviews) a few times over the years, but never lunch, and we've heard they have a great lunch menu.  We wanted to leave for our ride around 11:30 am, but the blinking red lights we affix to the rear of each bike so cars will see us were not yet fully charged, so we had to wait until after 12 noon to hit the road.

There are two routes into Borrego Springs....you can continue on S-22 from our location for 8.6 miles into town, or you can turn off S-22  onto Henderson Canyon Road and take a slightly longer route at 9.7 miles into town.  We almost always ride Henderson Canyon Road into Borrego Springs, and S-22 back.....Henderson Canyon Road takes us to Borrego Valley Road which drops us back at S-22 about 1 mile south of town.....

........when we left it was sunny with a few clouds, but by the time we arrived at the Red Ocotillo 40 minutes later it was much cloudier, but at least there was no wind so we chose to dine alfresco......

....they are pet, and bike friendly, and the food is next level.....

.....as we reviewed the lunch menu it began to get cloudier, and eventually I ordered a cup of coffee (excellent coffee by the way) to ward off the early afternoon chill.  I eventually settled upon their Hamburger #2, which has caramelized onions, red onions, bacon, 1/2 pound patty, and bleu cheese crumble served upon an artisan bun.....WOW!.....

This is not the burger I got, but it is pretty close (internet photo from Yelp)

.....TLE ordered their Rueben, which she ranked in the top 5 she has ever had.....

This is the Rueben, but TLE had potato salad

.....service was a little slow, but hey, what else have we got to do?  We both cleaned our plates, and were both totally happy with our menu choices.

By the time we paid our check, and got on our bikes to ride home it was 2:25 pm, and it had gotten much colder.  There was no way I wanted to take 40+ minutes to ride home at our normal pace (same for TLE), so we both set our bikes on the highest pedal assist we had and pounded out the 8.6 miles home on S-22 making it home in less than 30 minutes.....easy to do when you're riding along at 20+ mph.....lol.

By the time we arrived home the cloud cover had become complete, and it was already time to close the windows....it was getting chilly quickly.  I put away the bikes with TLE's assistance.....they are heavy, and it's nice to have a little extra muscle to load them into the trailer.  I plugged in both bikes, our individual Garmin GPS cyclo computers, and flashing lights to recharge, and turned on the Honda generator to send electrons to the trailer for just that purpose.

We'll have a lot of cloud cover the rest of the week, and a chance of rain beginning Thursday afternoon, which bleeds into Friday, so I'm sure the Honda will get some extra use over that time period.
