7:30 am - Thursday - September 4th - LPG&RVR - 55° F, humidity 36%, wind 2 mph out of the east by southeast......mostly sunny today with a forecast high of 88° F. On this date in 2017 TLE finally surpassed 100 miles of hiking at Yellowstone National Park.....
.....on a hike to Fair Falls, and the overlook for Grand Prismatic Hot Spring. It was kind of overcast that day so the colors at Grand Prismatic didn't pop like they usually do.
As I mentioned in yesterday's missive, I had a haircut appointment at Kaleidescope at 9 am Wednesday, and was I ever due, so we were out the door, and on our way to Alturas by 8:30 am, arriving at the salon at 9:50 am. I was able to sit right down, and by 9:10 am I had received my last haircut from Sheila this summer. I'm sure I'll be using the word 'last' quite a bit in the next few weeks.
Normally we would head right to Holiday Market to do our weekly shopping, but on this day we wanted to drive over to Canby to visit our favorite coffee shop, Coffee Adventure, which we have visited several times this summer already. We were there by 9:30 am enjoying breakfast sandwiches, and their wonderful coffee. We lingered there for about 30 minutes, then added a couple dozen pasture raised chicken eggs to our tally before heading back to Alturas. These eggs are right up there with the ones we get from our neighbor when we are at The Wilson Wilderness.
By the time we completed our shopping it was after 11:30 am, but we were still home before Noon. I helped TLE unload our purchases from the hatchback of the VW, and soon it was time for a nap, of course. While it was warm Wednesday we never had to use the A/C, which is a nice change.
While we were in town we topped off the VW at the local Indian fuel station. Their prices are significantly lower than those in town on US-395. For example, at the local Union 76 station diesel is priced at $5.89/gallon, while it is only $4.19/gallon at the Indian station (AIR Fuels - about a mile outside of Alturas on the Reservation)....that is a significant price difference. About this time of the summer we begin filling up our 5 gallon diesel can each time we are in Altura doing our weekly shopping to pour into the Newell fuel tank to top it off before we head south. This way we can avoid having to stop in California to buy diesel at regular, non Indian Reservation stations. I've already poured 5 gallons into the tank, and after this trip we'll need just 10 more gallons. The price we pay for diesel at AIR Fuels is similar to the price per gallon in Nevada.
Instead of heading directly to the Wilson Wilderness this year, we are going through SoCal to visit our kids, and revisit our new grand baby, Caleb, then down to Borrego Springs so we can boondock there for a week while we head over the mountains to Poway to see my cardiologist, then down to Los Algodones for our semi annual dental checkups, then to Wittmann to see our friends Tom and Darlene. We won't get to the 'Wilderness' until late October/early November.
Thanks for stopping by!
