Have you forgotten?

7:52 am - Saturday - September 11th - Seal Rock, OR - 46° F, 100% humidity, wind 6 mph out of the east.....crystal clear, blue, sunny skies this day with a forecast high of 62° F.  On this date in 2001 our country was attacked by Radical Islamist terrorists.......↴

....today is the 20th anniversary of that attack.....have you forgotten?

.....then there is Toby Keith's tribute...

.....on a much happier note, on this date in 2017 TLE and I were visiting my sister and brother-in-law at Triangle X Ranch (dude ranch) watching the sun set over the Grand Tetons.....↴

As you know the new Dexter electric trailer brakes arrived a couple of days ago, and Friday was the chosen day to install them.  I knew, done right, it would take me most of the day, so around 10 am I got to it.  I had already had the right rear wheel off to get take a picture of the manufacturer's label, which contained the part number.  I found them on Amazon for $325 shipped.  This is actually a tad less than I paid 9 years ago for the last set....

......I began by jacking up the right side of the the trailer utilizing my 20 ton bottle jack.....I know, a little overkill considering the trailer, empty, weighs around 4,000 lbs....., and removed the same wheel I did a week, or so ago.  Above you see the old brake assembly, and below the new one installed......

......the brake assembly has a 5 bolt pattern, and there is only one way to attach it.....perfect for a novice mechanic like moi.  It occurred to me the last time I installed these brakes that I should use 'spade quick disconnect' male and female connectors, because every time I cut off the old crimped connectors the wire from the trailer gets shorter, so that is what I did this time.  I might add it does not matter which of the two Dexter e-brake wires you attach to the ground, or signal wires from the the trailer.....they will work either way....another good thing for the novice mechanic....lol.....

.....I installed the male spade connector on the wire from the brake assembly, and the female on the wires from the trailer.....

....as I reinstalled each wheel I used Porter Cable impact driver to  screw the lugs tight, then finished with my torque wrench to tighten lug nuts to 90 foot pounds.  As I proceeded I cleaned the rust off each white rim, and used my Porter Cable angel grinder with a wire wheel to clean the rust scale off the brake drums, and then my bench grinder to clean all the lug nuts.....

......once the drums were rust free I sprayed them with WD-40 to coat them and inhibit future rust, and repacked the inner and outer bearings with grease.....

I used Magic Erasers to remove the surface rust on the white powder coated wheels

......by the the time I finished cleaning up, and putting away all my tools it was after 4:30 pm, and I was 'plumb tuckered out'.....a 20 minute hot shower  served to revive me somewhat, and a glass of iced coffee took me the rest of the way....thank you TLE!  In all it took me 6.5 hours of continuous work from beginning to end to install the new Dexter electric brakes, although it did not seem that long.

As the afternoon wore on the skies completely cleared, and we were treated with a beautiful, albeit, somewhat subtle sunset......

.....thank you for stopping by!

  1. At 4000lbs empty you must be 8-9000lbs loaded. I didn't realize the Newell was working that hard on the hills. That's one tough engine! Bob
