An earthquake?

7:54 am - Thursday - April 14th - Likely, CA - 35° F, 81% humidity, wind 10 mph out of the south by southwest......heavy overcast today with a forecast high of 44° F....snowing right now, turning to rain later in the morning.  The view this morning.....↴

A little snow overnight

....on this date in 2011 TLE and I were at Serrano Campground near Big Bear Lake, CA......

Wednesday was mostly devoted to setting up our site, and mainly focused on the trailer interior.  Now that we will be sitting in one place for the next 6 months it is time to completely unpack everything inside the trailer so it all can be used to its fullest......

Almost set up....just need to unpack the bike stand and the Workmate workbench

....yeah, I know....how on earth do we fit the VW and the turf in there when we're traveling?  Smoke and mirrors.....lol!

While I was working inside the trailer it suddenly began to shake.....it felt like an earthquake was in progress......then it suddenly rolled forward off the leveling blocks, and the tongue jack off its block of wood....that has never happened before. Fortunately, it was not an earthquake, and no small animals, or children were harmed, although an old, while adult could have been.  When we parked the trailer on Tuesday I put out the leveling blocks on the left (driver side) side of the trailer as it was low, and then put tire chalks behind each of the rear tires as I thought the danger was the trailer rolling backward, not forward.....doh!  When the trailer came off the leveling blocks it rolled forward....an action for which I had not prepared.

Upon inspection, the tongue jack suffered no damage, so I used the trailer valet jack to raise up the tongue again, and then put the block of wood back under the jack.....

.....once the jack was back on the wood block, I chalked both wheels on the passenger side of the trailer so it cannot move forward, or backward now........

.....then I deployed four of my aluminum piers to the four corners of trailer.....

....then, using my 18 ton bottle jack, jacked up the driver side of the trailer, and inserted the leveling blocks under both tires.....all is now well, and there should not be a repeat of that 'almost' disaster....

.....later in the day we decided to drive into Alturas, which is about 20 miles north of Likely, to check out the town.....specifically the grocery stores, and the local Ace Hardware.....

....the Holiday Market is a high end super market, and was very well stocked with all the things important to us.  Considering the extremely rural nature of this area the prices were pretty good.  The Grocery Outlet (this a national chain) reminds me of a very large Dollar General, but is pretty well stocked.  Additionally, the ACE Hardware Store (Four Season Supply Center) is quite large, and also has a large selection of lumber, which most ACE Hardware stores do not have.  To top all of that there are at least three interesting thrift stores in town, at least on Main Street, and there may be more, which we shall enjoy exploring on our next trip into town.

As we drove back south to Likely I was struck by how extremely rural this area is....

.....there was little to no traffic on US-395 during our 40 mile round trip drive.  We made one more stop at the 'General Store' located in downtown Likely.....downtown Likely is about 2 blocks long....there is a post office, a small café, and the General Store.  For such a small town the General Store was stocked pretty well with mostly essentials....they had some produce, and meat.  They also are the only gas station for 20 miles selling regular unleaded, and diesel....diesel is only $5.39/gallon in this small northeastern California town.....only about 50 cents more than Gardnerville, NV.

By the time we unpacked our groceries from the VW, and settled in for the afternoon is was after 2:30 pm.  The skies were still steely gray, and it was hovering in the mid 30's.  I sat down to read, and woke up about 90 minutes later from an unexpected nap.....those are the best kind!

TLE prepared a wonderful, thick chicken soup for dinner....the perfect meal on a cold, wintery afternoon!  We chased our soup with a glass of Savignon Blanc.  Life is good, and we are falling in love with the area.
